Jefferson Abington Hospital Expands Trauma Center to Meet Rising Demand

Significant enhancements aim to improve patient care and accommodate growing community needs

Jefferson Abington Hospital is undertaking a major expansion of its emergency trauma center to better serve the increasing healthcare demands of the community.

Currently, the Goodman Emergency Trauma Center manages over 80,000 patient visits annually.

With the planned enhancements, the facility's capacity is set to increase by 25%, enabling it to accommodate up to 100,000 patients each year.

This expansion involves reconfiguring more than 24,000 square feet of existing clinical space and adding an additional 10,000 square feet.

These changes will increase the number of treatment spaces from 80 to 116, significantly improving the hospital's ability to provide timely and efficient care.

The project is made possible through a generous donation from longtime philanthropists Bruce and Judi Goodman.

In recognition of their contribution, the trauma center will be named the Goodman Emergency Trauma Center at Jefferson Abington Hospital.

Bruce Goodman, a commercial real estate developer and longtime member of Abington’s Board of Trustees, emphasized the hospital's importance to his family.

“Abington has been there for our family’s most critical moments,” Goodman stated.

“We are honored to help ensure that every family in our community has access to exceptional care in a space that fosters healing.”

The expansion is part of Jefferson Abington Hospital’s ongoing efforts to enhance patient care.

Recent initiatives include the closure of the inpatient behavioral health unit to repurpose the space for an emergency department surge unit, addressing the growing demand for emergency services.

Additionally, the hospital has introduced The Safe Center, providing specialized forensic nursing care for victims of sexual assault, abuse, and human trafficking.

These developments reflect Jefferson Abington Hospital's commitment to adapting and expanding its services to meet the evolving needs of the community.

By increasing the capacity and modernizing the trauma center, the hospital aims to deliver faster, more personalized, and compassionate care to all patients.
